Just returned from the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo and the Michigan Garden Club’s annual meeting. The District III clubs and convention co-chairmen Phyllis S. and Norma S. did a wonderful job. The hotel was easy to get to. The employees were friendly, helpful and nearly always smiling. Original art work decorating the hotel was visually inviting as was the salt-water aquarium. (Who takes care of that? It was glorious!) Combined with the great food served, all in all, it was a great place to hold the meeting.

This year was a special year as MGC’s President Dolores S. graciously passed the organization’s future over to new MGC President Lynn D. and her Board of Directors. Former President Lynn B. did the installation with everyone listening and even laughing through the ceremony.

The actual meeting took one morning. Business finished, those who came for the fun went to the workshops. I only visited the Raptors workshop where Joe Rogers from the Wildlife Recovery Association spoke on loons, owls, hawks and eagles. He brought birds that could not be returned to the wild due to injuries such as eye or wing loss, carrying them around the room so everyone could get an up close look. I’ve never heard anyone talk so fast.

Besides the official function of doing the organization’s business, the annual meeting is an opportunity to meet garden club members from all over the state and catch up with friends about our club activities, gardens and families. Another part is viewing the amazing floral designs both those by clubs on dining tables and those done by individuals as invitational designs. I’ve included a few photos.
